I can understand the huge dislike of volumes 1 and 2 Jaune. Dude had some serious character flaws. Whether it’s the fault of the writers or just the character himself is another debate. What I’d like to hear from you is what steps Jaune would have to take to put him back in the green for you, or at least make him “meh” in your eyes.
I think what we’ve seen so far in vol 3 was a good indicator of a Jaune I think I’d enjoy seeing.
1) He’s still not on the level of the other characters combat-wise, but he’s growing into his role as a tactician, and that’s where his strength appears to lie.
2) He’s incompetent enough to provide comic relief, but not being infuriating about it. He’s trying and improving, and actually contributes by providing cover for his team.
3) I hope his next appearance in the next ep shows him returning the favour to Pyrrha and being truly supportive of her as a friend and leader. And that the writers don’t take the excuse to make it about him once again.
Bonus extras:
4) The show addresses his cheating to get into Beacon somehow. He doesn’t need to be expelled or actually punished, but his getting away scot-free with forgery, lying and cheating doesn’t feel right for a character like him.
5) Some character growth where he recognises how insecure and immature he was in vol 1 & 2.
6) I would be glad to see him eventually fulfil his potential and become a powerful huntsman, as long as the show develops it properly and over a period of time. Not suddenly go from zero to world-saviour as deus-ex-machina. I’m also assuming this scenario doesn’t suddenly turn him into RWBY’s star or MVP. He’s a support character and shouldn’t be upstaging the mains.
