so jaune expressing emotions is manpain, but if he doesn’t it’s toxic masculinity?
Hi, I don’t wanna drag my friend into this so I’ll just respond to this post! “Manpain” doesn’t (or at least shouldn’t) refer to a male character expressing emotion on its own. It specifically has to do with an exagerrated, selfish emotional response (the male character acting as if he was the one wronged), specifically in conjunction with the narrative treating the man in question as the victim as opposed to the actual person who was harmed.
A good example of this is in The Walking Dead. During one point in the show a character is sexually assaulted, but the story focuses almost entirely on her boyfriend’s feelings of anger, helplessness, and powerlessness. The issue isn’t that he has these emotions, but that her suffering is pushed to the background to further his development as a character (he becomes colder and more ruthless as a consequence).
So basically it’s an irritated reaction to a female character being used as a tool to further a man’s development.
In short, because I’m going to head off for the night, I have very little reason to hope that this very common pitfall will be avoided.
